The English music project known as Gorillaz was established in the late 1990’s by artists Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn. The duo’s unique depiction of four animated musicians, with the music performed being largely by Albarn, has been an enormous hit in the United States, even earning Gorillaz Grammy nominations and a nod in the Guinness Book of World Records (for Most Successful Virtual Band.)
Albarn and Hewlett had both been working in the entertainment industry, but Hewlett had been focusing on his comic strip, Tank Girl, while Albarn had been performing as a member of a number of different bands, most notably, Blur. The duo initially met as flat mates while living in London, and Gorillaz resulted from their creative collaborations while living together. In 2000, Gorillaz released its first EP, Tomorrow Comes Today, featuring the debut single, “Clint Eastwood.” Both EP and single were hits, and have paved the way for the follow-up releases Demon Days (2005), Plastic Beach (2010), and The Fall (2011), which spawned the international hit singles “19-2000,” “Feel Good Inc.,” “Dare,” “Dirty Harry,” “Stylo,” and “Doncamatic.”
Although Gorillaz is a “virtual,” animated band, the group does perform live and tour regularly, using additional live musicians to supplement Albarn and Hewlett. In addition, Gorillaz often performs using virtual 3D animation, as it did for the 2002 BRIT Awards and at the 2006 Grammy Awards, which included a collaboration with a virtual Madonna. Between 2000 and 2011, Gorillaz earned a Grammy (for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, 2006, for “Feel Good Inc.”); two MTV Video Music Awards, three MTV Europe Awards, and nine BRIT Award nominations. “Feel Good Inc” has also been included in the video game Guitar Hero 5 and in PlayStaion game SingStar.
Although Hewlett and Albarn have not released any new material in recent years and Hewlett has returned to work with the band Blur, Gorillaz fans anticipate new material from the duo following their extended hiatus.
