Kings of Leon was established in Nashville, Tennessee in the late 1990’s, when the Followill brothers (Nathan, Caleb, and Jared) and their cousin Matthew formed the band and began performing around the Nashville area. Their talents brought them to the attention of RCA Records in 2002, and in 2003 Kings of Leon released the EP Holy Roller Novocaine. The EP increased exposure for the band, and garnered them the recognition of Rolling Stone magazine, but it was the Kings of Leon’s full-length debut album, Youth and Young Manhood, which became an overseas breakthrough for the band upon its release in 2003.
The album’s blend of southern rock and garage rock created an enormous sensation overseas, particularly in the United Kingdom, although the Kings of Leon still had yet to crack the United States market fully. The band’s sophomore effort, Aha Shake Heartbreak, fared a bit better in the United States, and the single “Taper Jean Girl” was featured in two films – Disturbia (2007) and Cloverfield (2008.) But despite its acclaim from a number of industry peers and critics, Aha Shake Heartbreak still didn’t garner Kings of Leon the stateside success they were hoping for. Neither did their next endeavor, Because of the Times (2007), although they continued to enjoy a steady stream of success in the U.K. market.
The band’s breakthrough in the United States came with the chart-topping single “Sex on Fire,” spawned from Kings of Leon’s fourth studio album, Only by the Night. The album rose to number one on the UK charts, but also managed to reach into the top 5 on the Billboard charts stateside. The single “Use Somebody” also fared well in the states, and eventually Only by the Night rose to platinum status in the Untied States and gave audiences the additional songs “Revelry,” “Notion,” “and “Crawl.” The album earned Kings of Leon a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group and Best Rock Song for “Use Somebody,” in addition to a Grammy for Record of the Year.
Kings of Leon continues to perform and record with its same original lineup. Their most recent release is the album Mechanical Bull, which arrived in 2013.
