Rising indie rock performer Angel Olsen burst onto the music scene in 2014 with the release of her full-band debut album, Burn Your Fire For No Witness. But long before her breakthrough, Olsen studied music while growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, eventually garnering her earliest gigs as a backup singer for Bonnie “Prince” Billy and the Cairo Gang.
Angel Olsen’s debut was actually the EP Strange Cacti, which garnered her a contract with Bathetic Records. Strange Cacti was followed by Half Way Home, after which Olsen signed with Jagjaguwar to release Burn Your Fire For No Witness, her first offering to feature a full-band backup. The album has been earning Olsen significant critical acclaim, and she is definitely a star on the rise and one to watch.
In addition to her own work, and her work with Bonnie “Prince” Billy and The Cairo Gang, Angel Olsen has worked with a number of other notable musicians on various indie projects, including Marvin Tate; LeRoy Bach (of Wilco); and Tim Kinsella (of Cap’n Jazz.) Her collaborative work is featured on the album Tim Kinsella sings the songs of Marvin Tate by LeRoy Bach featuring Angel Olsen, which was released in late 2013.
