The American indie rock band known as Yo La Tengo was established in New Jersey in 1984 by founding members and couple Georgia Hubley and Ira Kaplan. The duo brought some other musicians into the lineup to round out their sound, and released a debut LP. Ride the Tiger, in 1986.
Although Yo La Tengo has never enjoyed significant commercial success, the group has a dedicated loyal following which has kept them recording and performing for now more than two decades. Additional albums from Yo La Tengo include: Fakebook (1990), May I Sing with Me (1992), Electr-O-Pura (1995), And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out (2000), I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass (2006), and Fade (2013.) The group has also released multiple compilation albums and countless EPs. Notable singles from Yo La Tengo include: “Speeding Motorcycle,” “Shaker,” “Big Day Coming,” “Tom Courtenay,” “Sugarcube,” “Little Honda,” “Run Run Run,” “Here to Fall,” “Super Kiwi,” and “Toymaggedon.” Yo La Tengo also crafted the film score to the 2009 film Adventureland, and has collaborated with multiple other artists on various projects over the years.
Yo La Tengo continues going strong even after twenty years, with the current lineup of Kaplan, Hubley, James McNew and Dave Schramm. The group’s most recent release, Stuff Like That There, arrived in 2015 and features their single “Friday I’m in Love,” a cover version of the classic song by the Cure. In 2017, Yo La Tengo performed alongside musician Robyn Hitchcock for two nights in New York City.
