Andra Day Biography
The American R&B, soul, and blues singer known as Andra Day was born Cassandra Monique Batie in 1984 in California. Andra’s vocal talents became evident when she was still a child, and so by the time she was a teenager she chose to attend the School of Creative and Performing Arts in San Diego to further hone her vocal skills.
Andra Day burst onto the music scene in 2012 with her cover of the Jessie J single “Mama Knows Best,” which rose to the top of the YouTube Music Charts. After signing with Warner Bros. Records, Day entered the studio to prepare for her debut album, collaborating with notable producers such as Adrian Gurvitz and featuring contributions by such high-profile artists as DJ Jazzy Jeff and Questlove. Cheers to the Fall arrived in the summer of 2015 and featured the smash hit single “Rise Up,” which became the song of choice for the 2015 Special Olympics advertisements and many other events for the year.
Cheers to the Fall has earned Andra Day two Grammy nominations, for Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance for “Rise Up.” Day was also included in Rolling Stone’s list of “Ten New Artists You Need to Know” for the year.
