Jazmine grew up in a household filled with music; her mother had been a studio backup singer and encouraged young Jazmine to pursue singing as a career. While still attending the Philadephia high school For the creative and performing arts, Sullivan signed with Jive Records but it would still be another few years before her career would take off.
Initially, Jazmine Sullivan provided background or guest vocals to work for a number of other artists, and she also began to write. Before her breakthrough, Jazmine penned hits for such notable performers as Monica and Jennifer Hudson, until she released her own debut, “Need U Bad,” in 2008, after signing with J Records. The song was a massive hit, rising to the number one spot on the R&B and hip hop charts, and rising into the top forty on the mainstream charts. Sullivan’s debut album, Fearless, followed, also rising to the number one spot on the R&B charts and to the number six spot on the mainstream charts.
Since that time, Jazmine Sullivan has been on a steady rise, with the release of her sophomore effort, Love Me Back, performing as well as her debut.
