The American blues band Hot Tuna was established in the late 1960’s by founding member Jorma Kaukonen. Launched as a side project for Kaukonen, who was at the time performing as Jefferson Airplane’s guitarist, Hot Tuna began with the lineup of Kaukonen, Joey Covington, Paul Kantner, and Marty Balin. After performing a series of successful concerts in the Berkeley area of California, the band entered the studio to prepare for a debut studio album.
The result, Burgers, was released in 1972 and charted on the mainstream in the United States. Hot Tuna continued to tour, record and perform until 1976, during which time the group released the additional albums The Phosphorescent Rat (1974), America’s Choice (1975), Yellow Fever (1975), Hoppkorv (1976), and a host of live albums. The band became known for their highly collaborative live performances, with a frequent rotation to the lineup and with multiple guest artists joining Hot Tuna on stage.
Hot Tuna disbanded in 1977 but reunited in 1990 with the album Pair a Dice Found (1990.) Since that time, Hot Tuna has remained a favorite band for live performances and festivals, and continues to tour and record with regularity. Now performing with the main lineup of Kaukonen and Jack Casady, Hot Tuna brings collaborative musicians onstage for the group’s performances to round out the lineup with each tour. Hot Tuna most recently released the album Steady as She Goes in 2011; that same year the group released the compilation album Setlist: The Very Best of Hot Tuna Live.
