The American jazz musician known as Najee was born Jerome Najee Rasheed in 1957 in New York City. Najee grew up in the Queens area of New York, and even as a young child he developed a strong interest in music. He first began studying the clarinet while in elementary school, but became inspired to learn to play the sax and flute after listening to his mother’s many recordings of classic jazz.
Najee enrolled in New York City’s prestigious Manhattan School of Music as a teenager, and after graduating he started his first gig, performing with Chaka Khan. By the mid 1980’s, Najee had turned his attention to a potential career as a solo jazz instrumentalist, releasing his own album, Najee’s Theme. The album was an enormous hit, earning him a Grammy nomination. The albums Day By Day and Tokyo Blue came next, also earning Najee awards and setting the stage for a career which has lasted well into the new millennium.
Since Tokyo Blue, Najee has released more than a dozen highly successful and well-respected jazz albums, including: Just an Illusion (1992), Share my World (1994), Morning Tenderness (1998), Love Songs (2000), Embrace (2003), My Point of View (2005), Rising Sun (2007), Mind Over Matter (2009), and The Smooth Side of Soul (2012.) Throughout his career, Najee has recorded with some of the industry’s most notable musicians, including: Herbie Hancock, Bill Cobham, Jeffrey Osborne, Prince, and Freddie Jackson.
Najee continues to perform and record. His most recent album – The Morning After, A Musical Love Journey – was released in 2013 and earned him nominations from both the NAACP Image Awards and the Soul Train Awards.
