Bebel Gilberto was born in 1966 to incredibly successful and musically talented parents; her mother was a talented Brazilian singer and her father was the famous bossa nova performer Joao Gilberto. Bebel spent her earliest years traveling around the world with both her father and her mother, as her parents performed and recorded albums, eventually settling in Rio de Janeiro when Gilberto was five years old. After her parents separated, young Bebel split her time between Brazil and New York, and her early years were highly influenced by many notable performers, who encouraged her own pursuit of a career in music.
In the mid 1980’s, Bebel embarked on her solo career, issuing the self-titled Bebel Gilberto in 1986. For the next two decades, throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, Gilberto worked with a number of performers in collaboration, but at the turn of the new millennium, she rose to become one of the best-selling Brazilian artists in the nation, with the release of the smash hit album Tanto Tempo, in 2000. The album Bebel Gilberto followed in 2004, and then Momento in 2007, both of which became equally successful dance sensations. All in One, featuring some of the industry’s most notable producers, was issued in 2009.
Most recently, in 2011, Bebel Gilberto provided the voice for Eva in the film Rio, and her music was featured in a number of major films, including Eat Pray Love (2010), Rio (2011), and episodes of Six Feet Under, Sex and the City, and Nip/Tuck. Thus far, Bebel has sold more than two and a half million records and her success continues on the upswing.
