Michael Buble was born in 1975 in Burnaby, British Columbia. Buble credits his experiences working as a young teen with his fisherman father as ones that taught him a sense of responsibility and self-reliance. Although by this time he had developed a passion for ice hockey, an equally strong passion for jazz music eventually overtook the one for hockey, and by the time he was a teenager, he was singing in nightclubs around the local area.
The singing gigs were often coordinated by Buble’s Italian grandfather, Demetrio Santaga, a plumber who frequently exchanged his own professional plumbing services for stage time for his grandson. There was no opportunity too small for Michael Buble – he accepted gigs for conventions, at local malls, at bars, and even for singing telegrams. Eventually, the exposure paid off, and after appearing on a number of stages and in a number of talent competitions (and winning), Buble began to earn more significant exposure, including an appearance in a 1997 documentary on the Bravo network, and regular appearances on a Vancouver-based talk show.
Michael Buble’s big moment came in 2000, when Brian Mulroney, the former Canadian Prime Minister, requested Michael’s performance at his daughter’s wedding. The exposure was invaluable, and soon Michael Buble found himself with a self-titled debut, produced by David Foster, featuring Michael’s renditions of such standards as “You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine” and “The Way You Look Tonight.” The 2003 release hit the Top 50 on the Billboard charts and brought Michael to the attention of the American audience. The following year, Michael Buble took home awards for New Artist of the Year and Album of the Year at the Juno Awards.
It’s Time earned Michael Buble additional Juno Awards in 2006, for Pop Album of the Year and Single of the Year for “Home.” Call Me Irresponsible followed in 2007, and hit the charts at number one in its second week. Partially on the strength of the single “Everything,” the album exceeded five million sales worldwide; the single itself became Buble’s biggest hit, and the follow up singles, “Me and Mrs. Jones” and “Lost” were equally successful.
Since that time, Michael Buble’s success has been non-stop. Recent albums—including Crazy Love (2009), Christmas (2011), and To Be Loved (2013)—have all risen to the top of the charts and spawned extensive tours with sold-out shows. Buble’s latest album, Nobody but Me, arrived in late 2016. In 2015, Michael Buble was the recipient of another Juno Award—this time, the Juno Fan Choice Award.
