The American jazz musician Norman Connors was born in 1947 In New York. Connors began studying drums as a child, eventually going on to study music at Temple University and later at the prestigious Julliard school in New York. In the late 1960’s, Norman began performing as a studio and touring musician, working for other artists, until in 1972 he signed with Cobblestone Records and began performing and recording as a bandleader.
By the mid 1970’s, Norman Connors had shifted from jazz to R&B as his focus, writing a number of hits featuring such vocalists as Phyllis Hyman and Michael Henderson. The songs “Valentine Love” and “You Are My Starship” both rose into the top ten on the R&B charts in the mid 1970’s, and notable albums from Norman Connors during this time include: Dance of Magic (1973), Dark of Light (1973), Love from the Sun (1974), Saturday Night Special (1975), You are My Starship (1976), Romantic Journey (1977), and This is Your Life (1978).
In the 1980’s, Connors embarked on a cross over to the disco genre, with the hit song “Take it to the Limit”.” Although Norman hasn’t had a major hit since that time, he continues to perform and record; he recently released the album Star Power in 2009.
