The jazz singer Maysa Leak was born in 1966 in Maryland. Young Maysa grew up in the Baltimore area and after graduating from high school went on to Morgan State University to pursue studies in music. Leak initially focused on classical performance, participating in the Morgan State University Choir. A chance meeting with Stevie Wonder led Maysa to her first gig after graduating, to perform with his backup group in California.
Maysa’s move to California brought her many other opportunities, including a gig as a vocalist on the Jungle Fever soundtrack. She also performed on a number of talk shows, including the Tonight Show, Oprah, and the Arsenio Hall Show. Eventually, Maysa joined the jazz/R&B group Incognito in the early 1990’s, which brought her to London for a number of years, although during this time she also began to prepare for her own debut as a solo artist.
In 1995, Maysa Leak released her self-titled album, to critical acclaim. The album was followed by: All My Life (2000), Out of the Blue (2002), Smooth Sailing (2004), Sweet Classic Soul (2006), Feel the Fire (2007), Metamorphosis (2008), A Woman in Love (2010), and Motions of Love (2011.) The album Metamorphosis rose to the number one spot on the contemporary jazz charts, as did the album Motions of Love.
In addition to her own solo work, Maysa Leak has provided vocals in collaboration with such notable artists as Jonathan Butler and Will Downing. Maysa’s most recent release is the album Blue Velvet Soul, which arrived in 2013.
