Katie Melua was born in the country of Georgia in 1984 and grew up in Ireland and England. Melua’s father was a doctor and she early on wished to study history or politics, but she developed a love of music as a teenager, attending the BRIT School for the Performing Arts. Katie eventually moved into her own flat in London and transformed the space into her own recording studio.
Katie caught the interest of a local producer, William Orbit, who helped launch her career. Melua’s debut album, Call Off the Search, was released in 2003 and spawned the UK hits “The Closest Thing to Crazy,” “Call off the Search,” and “Crawling up Hill.” Three additional albums followed: Piece by Piece (2005), Pictures (2007), and the House (2010), giving audiences the additional hits: “Nine Million Bicycles,” “I Cried for You,” “Spider’s Web,” “It’s Only Pain,” “If you Were A Sailboat,” and “The Flood.” For her music, Katie has been recognized with two ECHO Awards and a Goldene Kamera Award; she has also been nominated for two BRIT Awards in the categories of Best Pop Act, Best British Female Solo Artist. Melua also currently holds a record for performing a complete concert at three hundred and three meters below sea level, on the Norwegian Statoil’s Troll A platform.
Katie Melua has participated in a number of charitable endeavors, including Band Aid 20 and the 46664 concert to benefit HIV research. She has also recorded or preformed to benefit the Red Cross, Oxfam, and Fair Trees. Her most recent album release is Secret Symphony (2012), and she continues to perform and record.
