Esperanza Spalding was born in 1984 in Portland, Oregon, to a single mother who developed within her a love of music. As a child, Esperanza watched a performance by Yo-Yo Ma and fell in love with the sound of string instruments. She began studying the violin when she was still in elementary school, and she performed with the Chamber Music Society of Oregon until she was fifteen. In her later teenage years, Spalding learned to play bass and began performing around town in various blues clubs, bringing into her sound the classical training which had served her so well.
Esperanza began writing her own music when she was about sixteen, and at this time she began to experiment with vocals. Around this time, Spalding also left high school, earned her GED, and enrolled in a number of different music programs, eventually landing at Berklee College of Music first as a student and then later as one of the school’s youngest instructors ever hired. In 2006, Esperanza Spalding released Junjo, her debut album, to critical acclaim. Esperanza (2008), Chamber Music Society (2010), and Radio Music Society (2012) followed, in addition to collaborations with such notable artists as Noise for Pretend, Stanley Clarke, Mike Stern, and Nando Michelin.
So far in her burgeoning career, Esperanza Spalding has been recognized with multiple Grammy Awards for Best New Artist, Best Jazz Vocal Album, and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanied by Vocalists. In the past few years, Spalding has also been selected to perform for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremonies and at the Park City Jazz Festival in Utah, and at the Academy Awards in 2012, in an emotional performance of “What a Wonderful World” for the video montage to those in the industry who have passed. Esperanza Spalding continues to perform and she is currently making plans for her next studio release.
