The French jazz musician and composer Jean-Luc Ponty first rose to fame as a violinist in the 1960’s, particularly for his collaborations with Frank Zappa. But long before that, Jean-Luc studied music as a teenager at the prestigious Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris, earning the institutions Premier Prix award upon graduation.
Ponty’s unique jazz violin style utilized the instrument in ways never before experienced; his notoriety and popularity grew quickly, and by the time he was in his early twenties, Jean Luc had released his debut album, Jazz Long Playing. The album was followed by: Violin Summit (1996), Sunday Walk (1967), More than Meets the Ear (1968), Electric Connection (1969), and Jean-Luc Ponty Experience with the George Duke Trio (1969.) In 1970, Jean Luc Ponty was approached by Frank Zappa to collaborate on an album featuring Zappa’s original compositions performed by Ponty. The result was the groundbreaking King Kong: Jean-Luc Ponty Plays the Music of Frank Zappa, released in 1970.
Jean Luc Ponty went on to collaborate with Zappa on the albums: Hot Rats (1969), Over-Nite Sensation (1973), Piquantique (1973), Apostrophe (1974), and Shut Up ‘n Play Yer Guitar (1981.) In the decades since, Jean-Luc has toured throughout the world and released multiple albums which have charted in the top five on the Billboard Jazz charts. In the new millennium, Jean Luc Ponty has released Life Enigma (2001), The Atacama Experience (2007), and a number of live albums and DVDs. Ponty has also performed and recorded with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Stephane Grappelli, Wolfgang Dauner, George Gruntz, Michel Colombier, Elton John, and Chick Corea.
Most recently, Jean Luc Ponty reunited with Chick Corea to join Return to Forever, for a series of scheduled concerts. Jean Luc Ponty continues to be one of jazz’s most notable performers, and both his solo and collaborative work remain in high demand.
