The American professional golfer Ben Crenshaw, also known as “Gentle Ben,” was born in 1952 in Austin, Texas. Crenshaw began playing the sport when he was very young, ultimately going on to play golf both in high school and for the University of Texas, where he won three NCAA Championships in the early 1970’s.
Ben Crenshaw turned pro in 1973, and went on to become one of the few players in golf history to win his very first major event. Over the course of his career, Ben Crenshaw accumulated nineteen PGA tour wins, including the Masters twice (1984 and 1995.) He also played on the Ryder Cup teams four times between 1981 and 1995, and recorded top ten finishes in all four major championships during the same season. In 2002, Crenshaw was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Ben Crenshaw recently competed for the last time, in the 2015 Masters tournament. Crenshaw is still very active in the world of golf in his retirement; he and Bill Coore together founded Coore & Crenshaw, the golf course design firm. Coore & Crenshaw is currently working on courses in Wisconsin, Texas, Tokyo, Japan and Nova Scotia, Canada.
