The American professional golfer Hal Sutton was born in 1958 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Sutton attended the Centenary College of Louisiana, where he played golf for the school, showing great promise from the moment he stepped onto the course. Throughout his college career, he won fourteen tournaments, leading his team to the NCAA Tournament, and earning himself Golf Magazine’s College Player of the Year recognition for 1980. By the time he left Centenary College, Hal Sutton was a rising star on the circuit.
After turning professional, Hal Sutton won the Walt Disney World Golf Classic in 1982, and then went on to enjoy a career which included the 1983 PGA Championship and fourteen PGA Tour wins. Additional highlights of his career include: winning the B.C. Open in 1995; winning the Tour Championship in 1998; beating Tiger Woods in 2000 at The Players Championship to win the tournament; ranking in the top 50 on the Official World Golf Rankings for over two decades; and playing on four U.S. Ryder Cup teams between 1985 and 2002.
Today, Hal Sutton is an active philanthropist, overseeing the establishment of the Sutton Children’s Hospital in his hometown and participating in many other charitable endeavors. In recognition of his efforts, in 2007, Sutton was named the recipient of the Payne Stewart Award.
