The Canadian professional golfer Michael Weir was born in 1970 in Sarnia, Ontario. Long before Michael grew up to win the Masters Tournament in 2003, he grew up learning to play golf in his local community, although his first love was hockey. A left-handed player in both sports, Weir began winning golf tournaments when he was twelve years old, and by the time he was a late teenager, golf had become his sport of choice.
Early on in Michael’s career, he questioned whether or not he should try to switch to playing right-handed. Having met Jack Nicklaus once before, albeit only briefly, young Weir decided to reach out to the golfing legend to ask him for advice. Nicklaus advised Michael to play whatever felt natural, and so Weir moved forward as a left-handed player, never looking back.
After graduating from Brigham Young University, and with an impressive college career in golf behind him, Mike Weir turned professional and entered the Canadian Professional Golf Tour. By 1998, he had reached the PGA Tour, earning his first win in 1999, in Surrey, British Columbia at the Air Canada Championship. But Weir’s greatest achievement was in 2003, when he won the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, then the Nissan Open, and finally the Masters Tournament, becoming only the second left-handed golfer to win a PGA majors.
For the remaining decade and beyond, Mike Weir continued to compete on the PGA tour, despite injuries which affected his performance in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Today, Mike Weir is among the top financial earners on the PGA Tour and one of Canada’s most treasured athletes. Although Mike Weir recently took a leave of absence from the game, he has plans to return to the sport within the next few years.
