Retired stock car driver Sterling Marlin was born in 1957. Sterling grew up influenced by his father, NASCAR driver Coo Coo Marlin, and so it was no surprise that young Sterling would follow in his dad’s footsteps and also go on to compete as a racer. Sterling Marlin raced throughout high school, while also serving on his high school’s football and basketball teams. Sterling made his NASCAR debut in 1976, filling in for his father during a race at the Nashville Speedway. The experience set the stage for a professional career which would go on to last for two decades.
By the early 1980’s, Sterling Marlin had risen to three-time track champion at the Nashville Speedway, garnering the attention of Roger Hamby, who hired him to drive the number seventeen Chevrolet for NASCAR. As a rookie, Marlin finished tenth at Dover International Speedway and earned the Rookie of the Year Award. In 1984, he also finished fifteenth at the Daytona 500 and rose to finish twelfth at the Talladega Superspeedway.
Sterling Marlin went on to win the Daytona 500 a decade later, twice: first in 1994 and again in the following year, 1995. Marlin retired from racing in 2010, and went on to form the Tennessee Racing Association in partnership with a number of other drivers. The goal of the association is to maintain and support tracks in the states. Although Marlin is retired from NASCAR, he does continue to race regularly at the Fairgrounds Speedway. He most recently garnered two victories in 2013.
