American football quarterback Drew Brees was born in 1979 in Texas. Brees was born into an athletically talented family; his father had been a star basketball player for Texas A&M and his mother was an all-state athlete during her high school years. His uncle and grandfather had also spent their lives competing in or coaching for professional sports, and so it was no surprise that Drew was encouraged to experiment with various sports throughout his childhood.
Ultimately, Drew Brees chose football, playing for St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in high school. Brees also lettered in basketball and baseball, but excelled on the football field and ultimately rising to become one of Purdue’s most celebrated players and earning the attention of Purdue University, which offered him a scholarship. Brees graduated with a degree in industrial management in 2001, and then began his career as a professional football player with the San Diego Chargers.
Drew Brees made the Pro Bowl in 2004 and then joined the New Orleans Saints, leading the team to its first Super Bowl. Brees has remained with the team since 2006, earning the Offensive Player of the Year Award in2008 and 2011, and leading the NFL statistics in passing yards and touchdowns. Brees was also named Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XLIV and was recently named Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated in 2010.
Drew Brees has also become well known and loved for his numerous philanthropic and charitable endeavors, which include his own foundation, the Brees Dream Foundation which provides support to cancer patients. The foundation also provided extensive support to Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts in New Orleans, and its affiliation with Operation Kids also helps to restore and build athletic and recreational facilities throughout New Orleans. Brees was also tapped to co-chair the Presidential Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, an appointment which was given by President Obama himself.
Most recently, Drew Brees appeared in his own “It Gets Better” video in support of the campaign’s efforts to provide support to gay teenagers who are the victims of bullying.
