Former baseball player and current executive Joe Torre was born in 1940 in Brooklyn, New York. Torre grew up in an Italian-American household and began playing baseball as a young child. At the age of twenty, he garnered the interest of the Milwaukee Braves, who had previously also signed his brother, Frank Torre.
In 1960, Joe Torre made his major league debut, and in his first season ranked second in the 1961 National League Rookie of the Year. Torre played with the Braves, then the St. Louis Cardinals, and then finally the New York Mets, until 1977, at which time he became the team’s manager. Achievements as a player include the 1971 National League Most Valuable Player Award, but his achievements as a manager are even more impressive. For nearly thirty seasons, Joe Torre became the only major league manager to reach 2,000 hits and 2,000 wins. He led the New York Yankees to four World Series Championships, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014.
During his years as manager, Joe Torre also frequently worked as a commentator, and in recent years he has appeared in a number of ads and television shows in cameo roles. In 2008, Torre could be seen in a series of State Farm ads, and throughout the same year he appeared on the shows Gary Unmarried and Castle. He also had a brief appearance in the film Analyze That in 2002. Today, Joe Torre and his family run the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation, which seeks to prevent domestic violence.
