Former professional baseball player Lou Piniella was born in 1943 in Tampa, Florida. Growing up in the West Tampa area, young Lou played baseball throughout his childhood and attended the University of Tampa for one year on a baseball scholarship. Piniella left university to sign with the Cleveland Indians at the age of eighteen, however, launching his career as a professional baseball player.
Piniella played for the Seattle Pilots, the Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees, retiring from the Yankees to becoming the team’s manager for five years. During his eleven seasons playing with the Yankees, Lou Piniella brought the team to two World Series championships, five AL East titles, and four AL pennants. After managing the Yankees, Lou went on to also manage the Seattle Mariners from 1993 to 2002, earning the Manager of the Year Award twice in 1995 and 2001. He then went on to manage the Cubs in 2006.
Nicknamed “Sweet Lou” for his kind demeanor, Piniella also went on to become one of the most successful managers in the sport, ranking fourteen on the all-time list of managerial wins. He most recently joined the San Francisco Giants as a consultant for the team in 2011, but left after one year. In his retirement, Lou Piniella has served as an analyst for the Yankees on the Madison Square Garden Network and an analyst for FOX Sports. Most recently, he began his run as an analyst for Yankee games on the YES Network.
