The American golfer Davis Love III was born in 1964 in Charlotte, North Carolina. It’s no surprise that young Davis would go on to become one of the era’s most recognizable golf players; his father, Davis M. Love, Jr., was a golf professional and instructor who introduced him to the game. Sadly, Davis Love III lost his father in a plane crash in the late 1980’s, but his father’s influence on his game had been significant.
Davis Love III played golf for the University of North Carolina, becoming a three-time all-American golfer. During his time as a college student, he won six titles, and he earned his PGA Tour card on his very first attempt, after turning professional in 1985. The remainder of the 1980’s saw Love’s career continue on the rise, and in the 1990’s he won the World Cup of Golf four straight years in a row between 1992 and 1995. Over the course of his career, he has so far won twenty events on the PGA Tour, including the 1997 PGA Championship. His twentieth PGA Tour victory occurred in 2008, at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic.
Off the golf course, Davis Love III founded a golf course design company, Love golf Design, which he runs alongside his brother, Mark. The company’s first design was a golf course on Fripp Island in South Carolina, but has since designed dozens of courses throughout the United States and internationally. Love is also the author of the book Every Shot I Take, which honors his father’s lessons of life and golf.
Most recently, Davis Love III was announced as the coach for the United States golf team in 2016, for the Ryder Cup. In 2014, he competed in the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship.
