The Australian surfer Joel Parkinson was born on April 10, 1981 in Nambour, Queensland. Parkinson began surfing as a young child on the Gold Coast, largely inspired by his father, who was also a surfer. Joel’s love of surfing began with his father, who used to surf frequently. Young Joel began practicing his moves on his dad’s surfboard, and by the time he was thirteen, he’d already shows signs of the unique, high-intensity style with which he would eventually become associated.
While still attending high school, Joel began surfing competitively, eventually becoming the youngest surfer to win a Billabong Contest. Today, Parkinson competes on the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) tour, moving forward with a career which has seen multiple elite championships, including: eleven ASP World Titles; an ASP World Championship Tour Surfing Title in 2012; and the Triple Crown of Surfing for three straight years between 2008 and 2010. Other notable achievement highlights of Parkinson’s career include: winning the Jeffrey’s Bay ASP World Tour Event in 1999; winning the Bells Beach Rip Curl in 2004; winning the Boost Mobile Pro in 2004; and winning the Quicksilver Pro in 2006.
Joel Parkinson is sponsored by Billabong. He recently launched his own website, www.joelparko.com. When not surfing, he remains active in a variety of sports, and is an avid runner.
