Montana grew up in the small coal mining town of Monogahela, near Pittsburgh, and from his very early childhood he harbored a love of football. Joe began playing when he was only eight years old, and by the time he was in high school he was excelling in multiple sports, including basketball and baseball.
Joe Montana was offered a scholarship to Notre Dame University, and after winning a college national championship at the school in 1979, he began his professional career with the NFL. Montana was drafted by San Francisco, and during his career with them he went on to win four Super Bowls and earn three Super Bowl Most Valuable Player awards. Joe Montana retired from the game in 1995, although his legacy has endured far past the end of his career.
Throughout the course of his career, Joe Montana was named the NFL Most Valuable Player multiple times. He also earned Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year award and the ESP title of 25th Greatest Athlete of the 20th Century.
