American race car driver John Andretti was born in 1963. That John would grow up to become a race car driver is no surprise; his uncle his legendary Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti, and his family boasts multiple racers – his brother Adam, cousins Jeff and Michael, and father Aldo are all racers. His father left the competitive sport after a near-death experience on the track, but that did not deter his son John from pursuing a career in the sport.
John Andretti’s career highlights include sixty-one top ten finishes in CART; winning the Rookie of the Year Award at the PPG Indy Car World Series in 1987; winning the Gold Coast Grand Prix in Surfer’s Paradise, Australia, in 1991; reaching fifth place at the Indianapolis 500 in 1991.
John Andretti is no longer racing full-time, but he balks at the notion of being “retired.” Andretti continues to be active in his racing community, and holds a number of charitable races to benefit various organizations. The Race for Riley is held annually to benefit the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children. Andretti has also served as commentator and co-host for a number of racing events, and he does express an interest in returning to the track at sometime in the future.
