Huey Lewis and the News became an iconic band for the 1980’s, largely in part to a string of hits, most notably “The Power of Love,” which was featured in the hit movie Back to the Future. But long before that, in the late 1970’s, Huey Lewis was fresh off the heels of the recently disbanded band Clover. After garnering a singles contract with Phonogram Records in 1978, Huey Lewis started a band in 1979, but the name – Huey Lewis and the American Express – would eventually require a change after the credit card company American Express sued for infringement rights on the use of their title.
It would be Huey Lewis and the News’ second album, Picture This, in 1982, which would bring them to success with “Do You Believe In Love.” Sports followed in 1983, and topped the charts, selling over ten million copies in the United States. The album Fore! followed in 1986, Small World in 1988, and Hard at Play in 1991. A collection of cover songs was released in 1994, and then Huey Lewis took break for other pursuits.
Huey Lewis and the News celebrated their 25th anniversary with a live recording, Live at 25, in 2004. Two years later, in 2006, they co-headlined a tour with Chicago. The following year, Huey Lewis and the News performed at the California State Fair, and in 2008, at the 28th annual presentation of A Capital Fourth in Washington, DC. In 2010, they returned to the studio to record Soulsville, the first Huey Lewis and the News studio album in a full decade. Although the group has not released any new albums since then, they said in a 2016 interview that they have a significant amount of new material for an upcoming album sometime in the near future.
Today, Huey Lewis and the News has sold over thirty million records worldwide, and earned themselves one Grammy for Best Music Video (“The Heart of Rock ‘n’ Roll”) in 1986. “The Power of Love” earned Huey Lewis and fellow band members Johnny Colla and Chris Hayes an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song in the same year. They have also won thirty Bay Area Music Awards and boast the distinction of their five albums released between 1982 and 1991 all reaching Gold, Platinum, or multi-Platinum status.
