The singer-songwriter Sam Smith was born in 1992 in London. Young Sam began studying piano and jazz when he was still a child, and his earliest performances are actually with the Youth Music Theater UK, in which he starred in a number of theater productions. He was also a member of the Stortford Musical Theater Society and the Cantate Youth Choir, which helped to prepare him for his future career as a musician.
In 2012, an appearance on Disclosure’s song “Latch” brought him recognition which launched his career as a solo artist. Following, “Latch,” Sam Smith was featured on the song “La La La” (by Naught Boy), giving him a number one single before he’d even released a debut album himself. Following the success of “La La La,” Sam Smith signed with Capitol Records and released In the Lonely Hour, which gave him another number one hit with “Money on My Mind.” The song “Stay with Me” also rose to the number one spot, and both songs charted in the top forty in Denmark, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, and Switzerland. A debut headlining tour followed, bringing Sam Smith to the United States and to the set of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and also Saturday Night Live, on which he performed his hits “Lay Me Down” and “Stay With Me.”
Although Sam Smith is very new to the music scene, he’s already enjoying a career on the upswing, with A BRIT Critics’ Choice Award for 2014. He currently has plans for a sophomore album and an upcoming tour, both scheduled for the end of 2014 or early 2015.
