Vanessa Carlton was born in 1980 in Pennsylvania, into an already talented family; her mother is a music teacher and her uncle is a jazz guitarist. Although she studied music when she was very young, by the time she was a teenager, her interests shifted to dance, and Vanessa attended New York’s School of American Ballet for her high school years. Upon graduation, Carlton began performing around New York City.
A chance encounter with a producer through a singer-songwriter circle brought Vanessa Carlton the opportunity to record a demo. “A Thousand Miles” attracted the attention of A&M Records, and after signing with the company Vanessa released the single. It rose to the top of the charts quickly and garnered Grammy nominations in three categories. Be Not Nobody, Vanessa’s debut album, was released in 2002 and also rose to the top of the charts, ultimately selling more than two million copies.
“Pretty Baby” and “Ordinary Day” also fared well, and Vanessa Carlton found herself touring with Third Eye Blind and the Goo Goo Dolls before embarking on her own tour in 2002 and 2003. Between 2004 and 2011, Vanessa Carlton released the additional albums: Harmonium (2004), Heroes & Thieves (2007), and Rabbits on the Run (2011), featuring the singles “Nolita Fairytale,” “Hands on Me,” “Carousel,” and “I Don’t Want to Be a Bride.”
Vanessa Carlton continues to perform and record. Her latest album, Liberman, was released in 2015. Carlton is currently back in the studio preparing for her next studio album. The work, as yet untitled, is expected to release in 2018.
