Legendary Spanish tenor Jose Carreras was born in 1946 in Barcelona. Long before Jose rose to fame as one of the “Three Tenors” (alongside Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo), he grew up in the working class area of Sants, where he showed a talent for singing when he was barely in elementary school.
Fascinated by the opera performances he saw as a child, Carreras learned to sing some of the genre’s most complicated arias. By the time he was eight, he had entered Barcelona’s Municipal Conservatory as a student. Soon thereafter, Jose Carreras made his first public performances, in Barcelona’s opera house, performing in productions such as La Boheme and El retablo de Maese Pedro. In 1970, Carreras was offered his first tenor role in the opera Norma, which led to a pivotal role in the production of Lucrezia Borgia.
By the mid 1970’s, Jose Carreras had risen to become one of the world’s most beloved opera tenors. His career has since lasted well into the new millennium, and the last four decades have brought his more than sixty performing roles to audiences around the globe in some of the world’s most prestigious opera houses. In the 1990’s, he gained even further mainstream fame as one of the “Three Tenors,” in his performances alongside Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. The trio recorded numerous albums and performed internationally around the globe for much of the decade.
Jose Carreras is also well-known for his International Leukaemia Foundation, which he formed in the late 1980’s. Carreras himself is a survivor of the disease, and has since made it his mission to further assist research and support for those around the world also suffering from the illness.
Jose Carreras continues to perform and record occasionally. He has been recognized with multiple awards for his philanthropic endeavors as well as his talents.
