Pink Martini Biography
The musical group known as Pink Martini was established in 1994 in Portland, Oregon by founding musician Thomas Lauderdale. Lauderdale grew up studying classical piano and composition, but upon reaching adulthood he initially had aspirations to work in politics. To his disappointment, he found the environment not to his liking, but returned to his roots as a musician.
With a background as a pianist and composer, Thomas decided instead to create what he refers to as a “little orchestra,” to bring jazz, pop, and classical music to the masses. After teaming up with China Forbes, Lauderdale began composing music for Pink Martini, blending elements of pop and classical into a unique sound which has had tremendous appeal. The group’s first single, “Sympathique,” was a smash hit in Europe, most notably in France, where it was nominated for Song of the Year. After performing at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997, Pink Martini began to gather momentum both in Europe and the United States, paving the way for the debut album Sympathique and eventually making the band an international sensation.
Since that time, Pink Martini has gone on to perform around the world with more than fifty acclaimed orchestras. Following Sympathique, Pink Martini released another six albums, most recently Dream a Little Dream, which arrived in 2014. Music from Pink Martini can also be heard in such films as Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Shanghai Kiss, and on the television series: The West Wing, The Sopranos, and Sherlock. Pink Martini is scheduled for a number of international appearances in the coming year, and a possible return to the studio for another album release.
