Growing up in the Catskills in South Fallsburg, New York, DeGraw began writing his own songs at the urging of his older brother, Joey DeGraw, also a musician. Ultimately, it was his own creativity, down-to-earth perspective, and patience that led Gavin DeGraw to an already impressive career.
It was the teen drama One Tree Hill that would rocket Gavin DeGraw to fame when it 2004 it chose his single “I Don’t Want to Be” to became the show’s theme song. DeGraw’s debut album, Chariot, was released in 2003 under J Records and in addition to the popular single already featured weekly on television, it also showcased “Follow Through” and “Chariot,” which also became hits. An acoustic version of the album, Chariot Stripped, was released in 2004, and added Gavin DeGraw’s cover of “A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke.
The self-titled album Gavin DeGraw followed in 2008, including the singles “She Cheated on Me” and “In Love with a Girl.” Gavin DeGraw debuted at number seven on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart and at number one on the digital sales chart. Since that time, Gavin DeGraw has released the additional albums Free (2009), Sweeter (2011), Make a Move (2013), and Something Worth Saving (2015.)
