The Lieutenant Dan Band Biography
The Lieutenant Dan Band (also known as the Lt. Dan Band) was initially known as Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band. Inspired by Sinise’s character from the film Forrest Gump, the cover band was initially launched when Sinise was invited to join a USO tour to raise funds for disabled veterans; he asked if he instead could bring fellow musician Kimo Williams along with him and if they could perform to entertain the troops. Thus, The Lieutenant Dan Band was born.
Since its inception, the Lt. Dan Band has now grown from the occasional performance to regular gigs throughout the Chicago area, nearly all of them to benefit a variety of non-profit organizations. In 2004, Gary Sinise established Operation Iraqi Children, which benefits from the group’s performances.
Gary Sinise has received significant well-deserved recognition for his humanitarian endeavors with the Lt. Dan Band. Notable awards include the Bob Hope Award for Excellence in Entertainment; the Ellis Island Medal of Honor; and the Spirit of the USO Award. Sinise is also currently funding a memorial to our nation’s disabled veterans. The Lieutenant Dan Band will play at the opening ceremony of the monument.
