The English pop band Simply Red was established in the mid 1980’s, founded by members Elliot Rashman and Mick Hucknall. The duo came together and began to gather up additional session musicians, bringing David Fryman, Tony Bowers, Fritz McIntyre, Tim Kellett, and Chris Jones into the group. After signing with Elektra in 1985, Simply Red released its debut, “Money’s Too Tight (To Mention),” which garnered significant critical and commercial success.
The debut album, Picture Book, followed in 1985, but a number of other singles failed to chart before Simply Red’s biggest breakthrough. Upon release of the song “Holding Back the Years,” Simply Red became an international hit; the single rose into the top five in the United States, the UK, the Netherlands, and Ireland. By the late 1980’s, Simply Red was a household name and the band went on to become one of the most iconic pop bands of the era.
Between 1987 and 2007, Simply Red released the additional albums: Men and Women, A New Flame, Stars, Life, Blue, Love and the Russian Winter, Home, Simplified, and Stay. The albums spawned the additional chart-topping hits: “The Right Thing,” “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye,” “It’s Only Love,” “If You Don’t Know Me by Now,” “Something Got Me Started,” “Stars,” “Fairground,” “Your Mirror,” “Angel,” “Say You Love Me,” “The Air That I Breathe,” “Sunrise,” and “You May Me Feel Brand New.”
Although the group disbanded in 2010, Simply Red recently announced a reunion tour for sometime in 2015. They are expected to announce specific dates and locations in the coming months, but the tour is anticipated to occur sometime in the summer or fall of the year.
