Legendary performer Cyndi Lauper was born in 1953 in Brooklyn, New York. As a teenager, she opted to forgo her high school education in lieu of a career in music, and the gamble paid off. After singing with some local cover bands and an attempted debut album with Blue Angel, her first band, Cyndi Lauper’s manager secured a record contract for her in 1983.
She’s So Unusual was an immediate smash hit, in part due to the strength of the single “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and the now blossoming MTV, which was a perfect environment to showcase Cyndi Lauper’s quirkly and playful style. The single was the smash hit of 1984, going platinum five times. The follow-up singles “All Through the Night,” “Time after Time,” and “She Bop” were all equally successful. In the year following, Cyndi Lauper recorded the theme song to the film The Goonies (“The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough”) and began work on her sophomore album.
True Colors was released in 1986, and while it was still successful, it did not match the enormous success of Cyndi Lauper’s debut. A Night to Remember, released in 1989, did garner the hit single “I Drove All Night,” but it did not rise to the top of the charts. Lauper took the opportunity to take a break for a little while, and enjoy a short hiatus.
Cyndi Lauper returned in 1993 with Hat Full of Stars, and has continued to perform and record well into the millennium’s second decade. Other notable albums from Lauper include: Twelve Deadly Cyns… and Then Some (1994), . Sister of Avalon followed (1997), At Last (2003), The Body Acoustic (2005), and Bring Ya to the Brink (2008), which garnered her a Grammy nod in 2009.
Cyndi Lauper also began making appearances on television and stage, including Queer As Folk in 2005 and the Threepenny Opera on Broadway in 2006. In 2013, she wrote the music for the Broadway musical Kinky Boots, earning a Tony Award for Best Original Score. In 2014, Lauper earned a Grammy Award for Best Music Theater Album for the cast recording version of the soundtrack.
Cyndi Lauper has thus far in her career sold more than fifty million records and been recognized with awards from multiple industries – including the Grammys, Emmys, Tonys, American Music Awards, and Billboard Awards. Lauper’s latest album, Detour, arrived in 2016, accompanied by an extensive worldwide tour. Most recently, Cyndi Lauper toured alongside Rod Stewart in the summer of 2017.
