Debbie Gibson’s career began nearly three decades ago, when she burst onto the music scene at the young age of sixteen. Today, Debbie Gibson is not only a writer, producer, and singer, but also an actress and dancer.
Debbie Gibson’s debut album, Out of the Blue (1987) was an instant hit, with the hit singles “Foolish Beat,” “Only in My Dreams,” “Out of the Blue,” and “Shake Your Love” all topping the charts. The album went triple platinum and established Debbie Gibson as not only a teen superstar, but also a genuine talent. All of the tracks on the album were written, performed, and produced by the young Ms. Gibson. Her follow-up, Electric Youth (1989) was equally successful, with the hit “Lost in Your Eyes.” Additional albums to date include Anything is Possible (1990), Body Mind Soul (1993), Think With Your Heart (1995), Deborah (1997), M.Y.O.B (2001), Colored Lights: The Broadway Album (2003), and Ms. Vocalist (2010.)
Having conquered the music world in her youth, it was time for Debbie Gibson to expand her horizons. After the new millennium began, she turned her attention to theater. Her stage career began with the role Eponine in the Broadway production of Les Miserables. She went on to perform as Sandy in London’s West End production of Grease, and then Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. Belle, in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast came next, followed by Gypsy Rose Lee in Gypsy, Cinderella in the title role, and Sally Bowles in Cabaret. All performances were critically acclaimed and hugely successful.
In addition to her now established and well-respected theater career, Debbie Gibson pursues philanthropic endeavors which encourage the nurturing of young songwriters and performers. She founded the Gibson Girl Foundation, which awards scholarships to underprivileged children who wish to study the performing arts, and created Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth, a series of performing arts camps. She is also a spokesperson for Children International.
Debbie Gibson has sold more than sixteen million albums thus far, and holds the distinction of being the youngest person ever to write, produce, and perform a number one song (“Foolish Beat.”) She continues to perform and act; she recently made a cameo appearance in the film Rock of Ages, and appeared in the TV movie The Music in Me. The film featured new and original material from Gibson, including the song “Promises.”
