Marie Osmond was born in Ogden, Utah in 1959, the only daughter in a family of nine children. The Osmond Brothers established a name for themselves in the 1960’s, performing regularly on a variety of television shows, including The Andy Williams Show, but aside from an occasional appearance or two with them, Marie did not participate in the family singing group.
Instead, Marie established her own success as a solo singer in the 1970’s and 1980’s. In 1973, she released her first single, the country ballad “Paper Roses,” and the song was an instant smash success, reaching number one on the charts and earning gold status. The album Paper Roses fared equally well, and Marie Osmond released a few additional albums and singles over the next few years.
In 1976, Marie Osmond teamed up with her brother Donny to create a television show, Donny & Marie. The variety show was an enormous success, and ran for three years. During this time, Marie Osmond also began pursuing an acting career, appearing in a number of television shows, a few movies, and even voicing a number of animated characters. After Donny & Marie cancelled in 1979, Marie Osmond returned to country music, and scored a number of hits: “Meet Me in Montana,” “There’s No Stopping Your Heart,” “Read my Lips,” “You’re Still New to Me,” “I Only Wanted You,” and “Like A Hurricane,” bringing her career into the 1990’s.
In the next decade, Marie Osmond turned to musicals and once again television, co-hosting a daytime talk show with her brother Donny between 1998 and 2000. She also appeared on Celebrity Duets and Dancing with the Stars, and in 2007, she released Magic of Christmas. In 2008, Donny and Marie Osmond began their own 90-minute variety show in Las Vegas at the Flamingo Hotel. The show was expected to last for at least four years, but was still running as of late 2017 although the venue had changed.
Marie Osmond continues to perform, record, and even write—she recently authored the book My Mother’s Wisdom, A Daughter’s Gratitude (2013.) Osmond’s latest album, Music is Medicine, arrived in 2015. It features contributions from such notable artists as Olivia Newton John, Alex Boye, and Sisqo.
