The American band Rusted Root was established in 1990 in Pennsylvania, by founding members Liz Berlin, Patrick Norman, and Michael Glabicki. Rusted Root’s earliest success was found in the city of Pittsburgh, where the group served as the house band for Jack’s Back Room, a local establishment.
Rusted Root found a steady fan base for its fusion of world, rock, and acoustic blends. The band’s debut album, Cruel Sun, was met with critical acclaim, but it was the group’s sophomore effort, When I Woke, that became the band’s big breakthrough. When I Woke reached platinum status after its release in 1994, rising to the number fifty-one spot on the mainstream charts in the United States and featuring the hit single “Send Me on My Way.” The song became a favorite choice for multiple feature films and television shows, including Matilda (1996), Ice Age (2002), Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005), Chuck (2011), and the series New Girl and Cuckoo. NASA’s engineers even rested the song as the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity’s official “wake up” music.
Since the success of “Send Me on My Way,” Rusted Root has released five additional albums – Remember (1996), Rusted Root (1998), Welcome to My Party (2002), Stereo Rodeo (2009), and The Movement (2012.) The band continues to perform and record with the current lineup of Glabicki, Norman, Berlin, Zil Fessler, and Dirk Miller.
