Cowboy Troy was born Troy Lee Coleman in 1970 in Texas. Cowboy Troy’s unique brand of “country rap” music (commonly referred to as “Hick Hop”) arrived in 2002, when he self-released his debut Beginner’s Luck. Shortly thereafter, Troy signed with Warner Bros. Nashville and released Loco Motive, featuring the single, “I Play Chicken with the Train.” The album rose to the top of the country charts and launched Troy’s career as a country music star.
The albums Back in the Saddle (2007) and Demolition Mission: Studio Blue Sessions (2009) both followed, and Cowboy Troy became know not only for his own music, but for his collaborations with other big-name country artists, such as Sarah Buxton (“If You Don’t Wanna Love Me”), Angela Hacker (“Hick Chick”), and even Vanilla Ice (on his 2011 release, WTF.) In addition, Cowboy Troy has worked extensively with Big & Rich, releasing the single “Our America” and performing together at the Boston Pops in 2005, and he co-hosted Nashville Star alongside the singer Jewel.
Cowboy Troy continues to write, perform, and record. In 2014, he released the album King of Clubs, his last on the Warner Music Nashville label. A year later, he released Saloons on Neptune, featuring the single “Countdown to Vacation.” The album was among the first independently released on the “Hick Hop Federation” label. In 2017, Cowboy Troy released the single “Pork Chop,” which went on to become the theme for one of the National Pork Board’s monthly promotions.
