Lorrie Morgan was born Loretta Lynn Morgan in 1959 in Nashville. Lorrie grew up in a household filled with music; her father, George Morgan, was a country music singer who inspired his daughter’s interest. Lorrie was only a teenager when she first appeared on the Grand Ole Opry, but the thrill was short-lived. Just a few years later, George Morgan passed away, and the loss was devastating to Lorrie. She joined his band in his place when she was only sixteen, however, and began to perform regularly.
By the late 1970’s, Lorrie Morgan had decided to strike out on her own, and she disbanded her father’s group to pursue a variety of solo performance opportunities. She began songwriting as well, and by 1979 she’d scored her first small hit with the song “I’m Completely Satisfied With You.” A number of Nashville tours, opening for other performers followed, and in 1988, Lorrie Morgan signed her first major label recording contract.
Morgan’s debut, Leave the Light On, was released in the following year and spawned the country hits “Dear Me” and “Out of Your Shoes.” After that, Lorrie released an album nearly every year for the remainder of the 1990’s: Something in Red (1991), Watch Me (1992), Merry Christmas from London (1993), War Paint (1994), Greater Need (1996), Shakin’ Things Up (1997), Secret Love (1998), and My Heart (1999.) Her county singles throughout this decade include: “Five Minutes,” “He Talks to Me,” “We Both Walk,” “Except for Monday,” “Watch Me,” “Half Enough,” “I Didn’t Know my Own Strength,” “Back in Your Arms Again,” “Good as I Was to You,” “Go Away,” and of course her iconic hit, “What Part of No,” all of which hit the top ten on the country charts.
Lorrie Morgan has continued to record into the new millennium, releasing the albums: Show Me How (2004), A Moment in Time (2009), and I Walk Alone (2010), giving audiences the singles “To Get To You,” “He Drinks Tequila” (alongside Sammy Kershaw), and “You Still Want to Buy Me That Drink (Frank.)” Most recently, Lorrie Morgan released the album Dos Divas (2013), recorded alongside Pam Tillis.
