Rhett Akins was born in 1969 in Valdosta, Georgia. Young Rhett and his brothers developed an early love of music, forming their first band together before Rhett was even in middle school. Following high school, Rhett briefly attended university but instead switched to working for his father’s business. During this time, he continued to sing, however, and following a performance at a music festival in San Antonio, he decided to pursue a full-time career in music and moved to Nashville.
Rhett’s earliest gigs were as a demo singer, until Decca Records took notice of his potential and Akins signed his first contract as a performer. Rhett’s debut single, “What They’re Talkin’ About,” rose into the top forty on the charts, setting the stage for his debut album, A Thousand Memories, which fared extremely well upon its release in 1995. The album spawned the additional hit singles “I Brake for Brunettes,” “She Said Yes,” and Akins’s signature song, “That Ain’t My Truck.” Since that time, Rhett Akins has released the albums Somebody New (1996), What Livin’s All About (1998), Friday Night in Dixie (2002), People Like Me (2007), and Down South (2008.) The albums gave audiences the additional songs “Don’t Get Me Started,” “More Than Everything,” and “Driving My Life Away.”
Rhett Akins has not released any of his own new material since 2006, but he continues to perform and write hits for other performers. Akins has penned some of country music’s biggest hits, for artists such as Brooks & Dunn, Blake Shelton, Justin Moore, Aaron Lewis, and Dustin Lynch. Akins is currently a member of the songwriting trio known as the Peach Pickers, and he also writes for his son, Thomas Rhett, who launched his own career as a performer in recent years.
