The Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen was born in 1985 in British Columbia. Long before she became famous for her hit song “Call Me Maybe,” Jepsen spent her formative years at the Canadian College of Performing Arts. Upon graduating, Carly Rae entered Canada’s version of American Idol, competing on Canadian Idol and finishing in the season’s top three. After completing her Canadian Idol tour, Jepsen began focusing on the recording of her demos, which eventually attracted the attention of MapleMusic Recordings, which signed her to her first deal.
Carly Rae’s debut album, Tug of War, was released in 2008. Although the debut performed fairly well, it was nowhere near as successful as Jepsen’s sophomore effort, Kiss (2012), which featured the mega-hit “Call Me Maybe.” The single shot to the top of the charts and resulted in Jepsen’s first deal with an American label, Interscope Records, which has since overseen her rocket ride to success. Since that time, Carly Rae Jepsen has launched multiple tours, including serving as an opening act for Justin Beiber in late 2012. She has also appeared on the television shows 90210 and Shake It Up, and garnered multiple award recognitions, including nominations from the Juno Awards, the Teen Choice Awards, MTV’s Video Music Awards, the American Music Awards, and the Grammy Awards. Jepsen has accumulated the following wins so far: Song of the Year (from the Canadian Radio Music Awards); Pop Recording of the Year (from the Western Canadian Music Awards); and the Rising Star Award (from the Billboard Music Awards.)
Most recently, Carly Rae Jepsen has been selected as the spokesperson for the Candie’s clothing line, and she returned to the studio to begin work on her next studio album release. In the meantime, the compilation album, Kiss: The Remix, was released in 2013 in Japan, rising to the top of the charts in the country. Jepsen is most definitely a star on the rise and one to watch, with plans for future albums, performances, and tours on the horizon.
