The Scottish performer KT Tunstall was born Kate Victoria Tunstall in 1975 in Edinburgh. KT grew up in St. Andrews, Fife, but spent her high school years at a boarding school in the United States, in the New England area. Throughout this time, Tunstall performed indie music both as a solo artist and with other bands, until she caught the attention of the British record label Relentless Records.
KT Tunstall’s debut album, Eye to the Telescope, arrived in 2004. On the strength of the smash hit single, “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree,” the album shot to the top of the British charts, rising into the top five and earning Tunstall numerous award nominations, including a Mercury Music Prize, three BRIT Awards, and a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The album spawned the additional singles “Other Side of the World” and “Under the Weather,” both of which charted in the top forty in the UK. Around the same time, KT Tunstall also provided the song “Suddenly I See” for the film Devil Wears Prada, and the single shot to the top of the charts internationally, bolstering Tunstall’s fan base in the United States. The song was also used extensively throughout Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign for the Democratic nomination for president.
Since her auspicious career start, KT Tunstall has released the additional albums Drastic Fantastic (2007) and Tiger Suit (2010), featuring the additional singles: “Another Place to Fall,” “Hold On,” “Saving My Face,” and “If Only.” In recent years, KT Tunstall has shifted her focus to composing for film, providing scores and songs to such movies as The Kid (2010), Winter’s Tale (2014), Million Dollar Arm (2014), and Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast (2014.)
KT Tunstall continues to perform and record. Her most recent release, Invisible Empire/Crescent Moon, arrived in 2013. She is scheduled to enter the studio in 2016 to begin preparation for her next album, expected sometime later that year.
