Grammy-winning New Zealand singer Kimbra was born Kimbra Lee Johnson in 1990. Kimbra grew up in Hamilton, where her father and mother worked in the medical field. As a child, Kimbra began writing her own music while still in elementary school, and after learning to play the guitar as a young teen, she began performing in local competitions and at her school.
In 2008, Kimbra signed her first record deal with the indie label Forum 5, and moved to Australia to begin work on her first album. The result, Vows, arrived in 2011 and featured the songs “Settle Down,” “ Cameo Lover,” “Good Intent,” and “Two Way Street.” A reworked version of the album was released a year later in Europe and the Untied States, debuting in the top twenty on the mainstream charts in the latter.
But it was her collaboration with Goyte in 2012 on the song “Somebody That I Used to Know” which became Kimbra’s big international breakthrough. The song earned Kimbra and Gotye Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance in 2013. Around the same time, Kimbra’s single “Good Intent” was featured in both the ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy and the video game The Sims 3: Pets. She also wrote the original song “With My Hands” for the Tim Burton film Frankenweenie.
Kimbra is a young star on the rise and clearly one to watch in the coming years. Her latest album, The Golden Echo, was released in 2014, and she spent much of 2014 and 2015 on her “Golden Echo Tour.” Currently, Kimbra is back in the studio working on material for her next album, expected within the coming year.
