The American singer and songwriter known as Daya was born Grace Martine Tandon in 1998 in Pennsylvania. Tandon grew up in the Lebanon area of Pittsburg, in a traditional Indian American family. She learned to play the piano when she was a small child, and by the time she was a young teen, she’d learned to play not only classical and jazz piano, but also sax, guitar, and flute.
Daya enrolled in a music conservatory when she was in middle school, until in 2015 she moved with her parents to Los Angeles so she could begin to seriously pursue a career as a musician. There, Daya worked with Christina Chirumbolo and Gina Barletta at Paramount Recording Studios to prepare for her debut. She released her debut single, “Hide Away,” in the spring of 2015, followed by a debut EP, Daya. Both fared well commercially; the song “Hide Away” rose into the top twenty on the mainstream charts in the United States and fared as well internationally.
In 2016, Daya featured on the hit Chainsmokers’ song, “Don’t Let Me Down,” which went on to earn a Grammy for Best Dance Recording at the 59th Grammy Awards. Soon thereafter, Daya released her debut album, Sit Still, Look Pretty, and the album rose into the top forty on the mainstream charts in the United States. The album spawned the chart-topping title track, and the additional single, “Words.”
Daya is clearly a new pop star on the rise and one to watch in the coming years. Daya is currently on tour for the summer of 2017, performing throughout the United States, Korea, Japan, and Mexico. When she returns, she is expected to begin work on her follow-up album, scheduled for release in the coming year.
