The British singer/songwriter James Arthur was born in 1988 in Middlesbrough. James rose to prominence following his win on the television reality competition The X Factor, but long before his big breakthrough, Arthur started writing and recording his own music as a teenager. Before The X Factor, he had joined a number of small short-term bands, including: Moonlight Drive, Cue the Drama, Emerald Skye, and Save Arcade, which scored a few small hits with the songs “The Truth,” and “Superhero.”
After auditioning in 2012 for the UK version of The X Factor, James was invited to join the season’s competitors, and his performances eventually brought him to win the competition in December of that year. After The X Factor, James signed with Simon Cowell’s record label, Syco, and went on to release his debut single, “Impossible,” which rose to the top of the charts in the UK. Ultimately the single sold more than two million copies worldwide, becoming the most successful single by an X Factor winner in the show’s history. The single also earned Arthur a BRIT Award nomination for British Single of the Year.
James Arthur’s self-titled debut album followed in 2013, featuring the singles “You’re Nobody ‘til Somebody Loves You,” “Recovery,” and “Get Down.” In 2014, James left Syco, and signed with Columbia Records before releasing his second album, Back from the Edge, in 2016. Back from the Edge featured the number one hit single, “Say You Won’t Let Go,” and became Arthur’s biggest international breakthrough.
James Arthur recently re-signed with Syco, and has plans to release his next studio album in the coming year. In 2017, Arthur will go on the road in support of the band OneRepublic for their upcoming Honda Civic Tour.
