When Ryan Cabrera was first exposed to Dave Matthews’ music, he ditched his punk, high-school band and instead focused on acoustic guitar. A gift of studio time, given to Ryan by his brother for his birthday, earned the young Cabrera a three-song demo. Thanks to the generosity of the engineer, who was highly impressed with Ryan’s talents, the demo then led to a full-length album recorded for free.
The result was the self-released Elm Street—a huge success, and one which earned Ryan Cabrera a record deal with Atlantic in 2001. “On the Way Down” debuted in 2004, charting well on the Hot 100 singles, and Take It All Away followed shortly after. The album reached number eight on the charts, sold over sixty thousand copies in just its first week, and eventually went double platinum.
Cabrera followed his auspicious beginning with the albums You Stand Watching (2005) and The Moon Under Water (2008), featuring the singles: “True,” “40 Kinds of Sadness,” “Photo,” “Shine On,” “Home,” “I See Love,” and “I Will Remember You,” which became the closing song for the series Will & Grace in 2006, and was also selected for the show So You Think You Can Dance’s third season. Ryan Cabrera also contributed to the soundtracks for Son of the Mask and the Fantastic Four, with the songs “Inside Your Mind” and “Always Come Back to You.”
Ryan Cabrera continues to perform and record. He recently released his own web series, Live From Ryan’s Living Room, and his 2015 hit single, “House on Fire,” is featured on his EP Wake Up Beautiful. Most recently, as part of the musical collaboration “Beyond the Sky,” Ryan Cabrera released the single “Right on the Money” in 2016. The song was recorded in partnership with fellow musician Nash Overstreet.
