Kali Uchis is a Colombian singer and songwriter born Karly-Marina Loaiza in 1994. She frequently spent her younger years bouncing between the United States and Colombia in the 1990s. When she finally found solid ground in the US, she started playing in the jazz band and got involved in photography. While Uchis wrote songs and poems, she initially did not want to sing but released her debut project Drunken Babble in 2012. She then collaborated with many artists until her debut EP in 2015, Por Vida, was received to much critical acclaim.
In 2017, Uchis released “Tyrant” before going on her first tour. She would open for singer Lana Del Rey the next year while preparing to release her debut album Isolation. Kali Uchis made her television debut on The Tonight Show and eventually released her album in the spring of 2018.
Kali Uchis was featured on Daniel Caesar’s successful single “Get You,” which was certified double Platinum and peaked at #93 on the Billboard Hot 100. The record also was nominated for a Grammy in 2017. Kali Uchis was also featured on Tyler, the Creator’s record “See You Again,” which was certified Platinum. Her own song featuring Tyler and Bootsy Collins, “After the Storm,” was certified Gold and peaked at #16 on the US R&B charts. Her debut album Isolation peaked at #32 on the Billboard 200 and charted well in New Zealand and Canada, among others.
Kali Uchis is currently working on her follow up project and was recently featured on producer Kaytranada’s album Bubba in late 2019.
