Born Anastacia Lyn Newkirk in 1968, Anastacia was raised in New York City in a family already filled with entertainers; her mother was a theater actress and her father a singer. Despite her diagnosis with Crohn’s disease at the young age of thirteen, Anastacia launched a career as a dancer, appearing in music videos and on Club MTV. She was the finalist on the MTV show The Cut, and so in 1999 she began to attract the interest of record executives and labels.
Anastacia’s debut album, Not That Kind, was released in 2000 to huge success. The album sold over two million copies and found a home in the Top Ten in Europe. In the United States, the single “I’m Outta Love” quickly became a dance favorite, which paved the path for a US version of the album, released in 2001.
Additional albums followed: Freak of Nature (2002), Anastacia (2004), Heavy Rotation (2008), It’s a Man’s World (2012), Resurrection (2014), and A 4 App (2016.)
On the personal front, Anastacia has been a consistent supporter of a variety of charities, including the Life Ball (a European-based AIDS charity concert), and Make A Difference and Challenge for the Children. She also joined Annie Lennox and twenty-two additional female artists to record “Sing,” with the goal of raising awareness of mother to child HIV transmission in Africa. A cancer survivor herself, Anastacia also established “The Anastacia Fund” for breast cancer awareness.
Anastacia continues to perform, tour, and contribute to various philanthropic endeavors. She most recently competed as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, a UK-based reality show similar to the American Dancing with the Stars. Her latest compilation album, Ultimate Collection, was released in 2016 and launched an extensive international tour. It was followed by her Live album, Live at the Eventim Apollo Hammersmith 2017.
