The English pop “boy band” known as Take That was established in 1990, founded by members Robbie Williams, Mark Owen, Jason Orange, Howard Donald, and Gary Barlow. Under the guidance of producer Nigel Martin-Smith, the boys came together to create a group in the fashion of New Kids on the Block, but one with a more far-reaching demographic appeal. The group made a debut TV appearance in 1990, performing the yet unreleased “Waiting Around,” and spent the earlier part of the 90’s focusing on a hit breakthrough.
That breakthrough came in 1992, when Take That released the song “It Only Takes a Minute.” The song rose into the top ten on the UK charts and set the stage for the equally successful hits: “I Found Heaven,” “A Million Love Songs,” and “Could It Be Magic.” Take That’s debut album, Take That & Party, was also released in 1992, followed by the albums Everything Changes (1993) and Nobody Else (1995.) The albums gave audiences the additional hits: “Pray,” “Relight My Fire,” “Babe,” “Everything Changes,” “Love Ain’t Here Anymore,” “Sure,” “Back for Good,” “Never Forget,” and “How Deep Is Your Love.”
Take That embarked on a hiatus in 1996, but returned in 2006 with the album Beautiful World, featuring the songs: “Patience,” “I’d Wait for Life,” and “Rule the World.” But it was the album The Circus, released in 2008, which was among Take That’s most successful, earning the group multiple awards, including BRIT Awards for Best Group, Best British Single, and Best Album. Beautiful World was followed by The Circus (2008) and Progress (2010), featuring the hits: “Greatest Day,” “Up All Night,” “Said It All,” “The Flood,” “Kidz,” and “Love Love.”
Take That continues to perform and record. The group recently release the album III in 2014, featuring the number one hit “These Days.” The album also rose to the number one spot on the album charts, and Take That has plans for a corresponding tour to follow in 2015.
